Memphis was the place to be this past weekend. Specifically, the Memphis Comic Con which is held annually in that great city. The one thing I noticed more than anything were the friendliness of its people. As far as the con staff are concerned, they were simply AWESOME! Joe Thordarson runs a well-oiled machine with a wonderful, friendly staff. I found myself missing them after I left. Normally, my family travels with me but this time our daughter caught bronchitis just before the trip so they weren’t able to go. I was sorely torn about going but my sweet wife strongly encouraged me to keep this commitment. I’m glad she did.
I got to share with so many about one of the motivating factors behind writing THE JUPITER CHRONICLES which was growing up without a dad. In writing HAVEN OF DANTE, I used the horrible experience my wife had to endure at the hands of rapists many years ago. It’s not something I take lightly or to simply include as a plot point but much like “The Jupiter Chronicles”, we want to be a source of encouragement for as many people as possible. Anyone who had endured such a horrific act or grown up without a father-figure can have a happy ending if you make good choices for yourself.
As a result of sharing these motivating factors, many attendees shared their stories with me about lost dads and hardships they had endured with family as well as what matters most to them. This made the entire weekend so very worth it and meaningful. It was also nice to see how many parents were looking for something for their kids that was really family-friendly and clean. I could not thank them enough for trusting me to provide that for them. It was wonderful to meet other creators of art, fiction and other merch.
Of course, there were cosplayers galore. I included some images below for your perusal. To the staff of Memphis Comic Con, my wholehearted thanks for a wonderful weekend.
If you’ve never been, I strongly recommend this awesome con. Visit http://memphiscfc.com for updates on next year’s event!
In the meantime, hope you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
