HI All,

I need your help in creating awareness for The Jupiter Chronicles in several Goodreads categories. What this will do is increase its rank and bring it into the forefront of books in the respective categories which will obviously result in sales.

9780615633336I’ve made it easy for you to vote in each category. Simply click on each link and it will take you directly to the book. Hit the vote button and close out the window. Then return to the post and click on more categories.

Even though some of the lists sound the same, I assure you they are not. They are separate lists. The more the book appears at the top of each list the more exposure it will receive! Vote on as many (or as little) as you like.

Resources for Struggling Readers . . . and a Tip

Hi All,

It’s Spring Break and there’s . . . snow on the ground. But hey, who’s complaining right? After all, it gives some of us an excuse to stay in and do some writing while looking out the window at the fresh-fallen snow. And although I love to write, I didn’t always love to read. Doesn’t make sense does it? Perhaps it was because of my ultra-low attention span. I’ve always gotten bored very easily. It took picking up a comic book (which was frowned upon when I was a kid) or reading Science Fiction to keep my attention.

Or perhaps it was because of my reading level at the time.

9780615633336Defining reading levels have come a long way as detailed in the Reading Report developed by Harcourt’s Achieve Educational Support Department. I find the specificity of the report interesting because it gives authors like me the chance to zero in on readers of specific grade levels and speak to them directly. The downside is that zeroing in on these readers is that it (possibly) flies in the face of mass media and goes against the grain of what we’re used to. I’ve not read one negative review of The Jupiter Chronicles as of yet but what I do find is that there are times that the reviewer finds it surprising that it’s for a younger audience.

Have we allowed ourselves to become so indoctrinated by The Hunger Games and Harry Potter that we assume that all Science Fiction for children must be targeted to 5th grade and up?

Or is that there is not a whole lot of Science Fiction for this age group to choose from?

Science Fiction has always been known for its underlying messages hidden behind the words and symbolism. It needs to be exciting, fun and most importantly, keep the young reader engaged. As I mentioned before, I have a really short attention span. I wrote this book for my young friends who might share the same attribute at a reading level that is appropriate for kids who struggle with reading.

There are tons of tools out there that are designed to help parents discover the reading level of their child and encourage them to find age-appropriate material for their little ones.

Reading Rockets – helps parents and teachers discover books for struggling readers. It’s a great resource for teachers, parents and librarians.

Reading Recovery  and a criteria for age-appropriate literature, lessons for teaching struggling readers and more.

The Florida Center for Reading Research provides webcasts on reading intervention.

Help for Struggling Readers is a great blog by a mom and educator. This blog also helps parents of children with disabilities. Joan Brennan is also the developer of the reading card which you can read about on her site.

All of the above are great resources. As for a tip? If you have or know a child that is struggling with reading and need something to keep their interest, look no further.

Try The Jupiter Chronicles.

Reader’s Theater: The Journey Home

Leonardoverse Readers Theater-page-0

Hi All,

In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, last Friday I hosted a Reader’s Theater at Nolensville Elementary here in my hometown. The script, titled The Journey Home, was based on The Jupiter Chronicles and told the story of Ian and Callie’s journey to return the Orb of Water to the Sinu. The theme of the story was “family is forever”.

If you’ve never attended a Reader’s Theater before it’s pretty simple. Actors do not memorize their lines but instead read directly off the script and perform in front of an audience. In this case, I picked kids out of the audience to read the parts of Ian, Callie, Stinky Frank, the Sinu and a Doomslayer while the audience provided the special effects.

The special effects were hilarious. I also included a lesson on writing technique which consisted of things like:

Cat in Hat

  1. How to get ideas for a story.
  2. Using a simple character interview to flesh out your characters.
  3. Establishing setting.
  4. Conveying a message from your own personal experiences.
  5. Research.
  6. Writing hooks and use of adjectives.

If you’re an educator and would like to download a copy of the script, you can do so by clicking on Leonardo Ramirez Readers Theater. Please feel free to adjust or alter to match the grade level or common core standards.

Science Fiction for the Human Condition

I received a follow on Twitter this week (among others) that caught my attention simply because for the longest I’ve been struggling with who my target audience is and who I should strive to connect with. Before I continue, however, let me say that my first and foremost reason for blogging is to connect with you, the reader. You have plenty of other more important things that call for your attention so I’m extremely grateful for the time that you’re taking to read.

The fact of the matter is that while I will always be myself when I write, I long to know who my readers are and I don’t always know that unless folks comment. So, to get you to comment more I have to know who you are. But to know who you are I first have to know who I am and how we can connect That’s where the Twitter follower came in. It turns out she’s a branding expert from LA who provides a wonderful booklet on branding that every entity who is struggling to get their message out needs to read and it asks some very good questions.

If you’d like to reach out to Kimberly, she can be found at http://www.kimberlybordonaro.com/. I did notice that some of my fellow writers follow her as well. Her Twitter page can be found at https://twitter.com/Brandspiration

Questions such as who is my target audience?. More importantly, what is my purpose?

My heart and motive have always been for people who are hurting. These can be kids who have had to suffer through child abuse or neglect or an absent parent which can be equally torturous as was the case in The Jupiter Chronicles. It can also be young girls who have suffered an assault like Haven did in Haven of Dante. Young or old it doesn’t matter. Those are the kids and adults I want to speak to because I’ve been there and so has my wife.

Reading these questions has made me realize that this is who I am and this is who I’ve wanted to reach all along. I just didn’t know how to verbalize it. I’d sit at night next to my wife and ask her why is it that people won’t connect to what I’m trying to do and to what’s in my heart. For years I’ve been frustrated and would say to myself, “if people understood my motive for doing this why aren’t they more supportive??”

It’s because I’ve never explained it before now.

I hope that you’ll stay with me and my family in this journey. What will help me to know that you’re with me is that you comment and share with others what we’re trying to do. Writers need to be encouraged and I’m no different.

So what am I trying to do?

Through the written word, let the reader know that they’re not alone and that they can make good choices for their future in their heart and mind. I want to let them know that I get that they’ve been dealt some pretty bad cards but it doesn’t have to stay that way. That because of our human condition we are going to screw up and make mistakes. I want dads to wake up and learn that they need to spend more time at home. I want kids to know that they are loved and precious. I want women to know that they don’t have to put up with verbal and physical abuse. Yes there will be giant robots. There will be martial arts and girls who can kick booty. But more importantly, I want the reader to learn to smile and laugh again.

With that said, here’s our new logo.

Reviews that Matter!

Hi All,

Happy New Year! Hope you had a wonderful Holiday Season and a safe New Year. In our household we took turns suffering a stomach bug but we’re all good now. At least we were together.

We writers are human. Like anyone who is working towards their dream we have our moments where we wonder if anyone is going to not only read their work but love it enough to share it with others. While I would say that the latter is the ultimate compliment a notch up from that is an honest review that comes from a mom and her kids.

MPOV_Logo

I think that the reason why this one review means so much to me is because of the kids reaction to the book. I don’t want to spoil it or ask you to spend too much time here. All I can say is that this one really lifted me up. So instead, please visit Mom’s Point of View for a very cool review of The Jupiter Chronicles.

I would encourage you to visit their blog often for more from a Mom’s Point of View.

The review can be found here.
